Condenser fan motor:
diagnose it, prove it, replace it.
The house is warm, the compressor is running and the condenser fan blade is not turning. Work the call the way a technician would: confirm the symptom, prove the circuit dead, test the capacitor and the motor, then replace the motor and verify the repair.

The job
What you do in this lab
- Set the thermostat, open the yard door and watch the cooling cycle to confirm the fan is not running.
- Measure voltage at the fan leads, then pull the disconnect and apply lockout and tagout.
- Prove your meter, verify the circuit dead three ways, and prove the meter again.
- Discharge the dual run capacitor, read the fan section in microfarads and read the motor windings.
- Pull the fan deck, swap the motor, confirm rotation and set the blade depth in the shroud.
- Restore power, watch the unit start and run, check supply air at the register and record the job.
Skills practiced
What it builds
- Lockout and tagout
- Live-dead-live meter verification
- Capacitor testing
- Motor winding resistance
- Fan motor replacement and blade depth
- Start-up verification
Every action is scored as you work. Wrong tools, skipped safety steps and wrong readings cost points, and the questions along the way ask why, not just what.
How to play
Browser or headset
In a browser
Open the lab on a laptop or desktop in Chrome, Edge or Safari. Look around with the mouse and click to act. On a touchscreen tablet the lab switches to touch controls. The lab is a large download, so give it a moment on the first load.
In VR
On a Meta Quest, open the Quest browser and go to titanlearning.com/vr/condenser-fan-motor. Choose Play it in your browser, then Open in VR inside the lab, then Enter VR in the tab that opens. Use the controllers, or put them down and point and pinch with your hands.
For schools
Train on labs like this every week
This lab is one of the virtual skills labs built into Titan Learning programs. Learners practice the work between lessons, and instructors see every attempt and score. A headset is optional.
